UK Free HDTV

There is now a wide choice of Free High Definition Television (HDTV) channels available in the United Kingdom. These can be watched without subscription. Services such as Freesat, Freeview and Sky Freesat are all available subscription free. This means that if you have the right equipment, such as a digital satellite receiver you will be able to watch HDTV for free! Below is a list of the most popular way of watching High Definition Television in the UK for free.


Freeview HD

Freeview Television is available through a digital satellite box. The television signal is received though a normal television cable. Freeview is now broadcasting High Definition channels such as BBC 1 HD and ITV HD. These channels are free to watch if you have the correct Freeview HD digital set top box. There are no subscription costs with Freeview HD. Freeview PVR Boxes are also available.


BT Vision

BT Vision is available for free if you already have BT Broadband. There is a one off fee to receive the Digital Set Top box but once installed you have the benefit of downloading HD Films or watching TV on demand and even Pay per View. BT Vision is not currently a High Definition Television set top box, but it up scales the existing signal to 1080i High Definition quality. The BT Vision Plus Box is also a PVR.


Freesat HD

Freesat is a Free to Air Satellite Television service. If you have a satellite dish and a satellite receiver you will be able to watch over 200 free to air channels including High Definition channels such as BBC HD, BBC1 HD and ITV HD. Freesat PVR's are also available. PVR's allow you to pause and record live TV much the same way as SKY plus.


Google TV

Google TV is new to the UK market. It has been spread across the United States at the moment. It promises to combine television and Internet into one easy access service through your television. It promises to use your existing TV service, either Aeriel or Satellite and combine it with Internet TV. You will need a Google TV set top box, currently entitled the Logitech Revue. It is envisaged that you will be able to control all of the Google TV functions with your Android, (or other smart phone), mobile phone. High Definition Television is available through Freeview HD, Freesat HD and the internet, i.e YouTube.


Internet TV

Internet TV is becoming an increasingly popular method of watching Television. YouTube is already broadcasting television programs in Standard and High Definition quality. The most popular Internet TV facilities include BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD (Channel 4 on Demand) and 5 Demand (Channel 5 on Demand. There is even STV player for Scotland's Television channel.


Gaming Devices

Gaming devices such as the Play Station 3 already have the ability to watch BBC Iplayer. The Nintendo Wii is currently delivering On demand television to millions of people who have the device and internet connection in Japan. It is planned to run this out globally. The Xbox 360 is offering SKY player through a subscription charge starting at £15.00 per month.


Other Devices

If you have other devices such as the Humax Freesat HD Recorder, (Humax Foxsat HDR) you will be able to watch BBC iPlayer. This is provided you have connected your Broadband via Ethernet at the back of the device. More and more TV is available to view on your Mobile phone because Mobile phones are becoming smarter and Apps are being written all the time to allow TV programs to be played.

A recent device called the Fetch TV box is the most recent Freeview HD digital set top box. It combines a Freeview HD PVR, which allows you to pause, rewind and record live TV, with the BBC IPlayer, Sky player and Fetch Media Centre. The Fetch Media centre connects wirelessly to your broadband router and allows you to share photos and video's in high definition.
